This is the story of a being made of stardust and whole universes who lost his wings in a small glass vial. Some days, he will look up at the sky and cry tears for the stars. Some days, he would wish he could make his feet rise from the earth. Some days he thinks of the fringe of the mountains reflected in lakes across the world and only a thought away. Some days, he thinks of grand forests that cover thousands of miles in shadows. Some days, he thinks of long, winding roads that never end, and a car that never stops rolling through the cities.
Soon he will find that the price of his essence is humanity. Soon he will look up at the stars and understand. Soon he will see a shooting star and wonder if his brother will land safely, if he held onto the torn and destroyed remains of Heaven and that’s why he has survived this long without falling.
What a sacrifice it would be, He will think, to swallow a star and become feared and powerful. Blood and flesh and pain and despair— who would give up these, when there are smiles and laughter and references to understand, burgers to eat, people to save? When there are roads to traverse, people to meet, souls to touch and the tinniest facets and idiosyncrasies to marvel?
Until the time has come and all that road has stopped flashing, and the purring-rumble of the Impala has come to an end, and there are no more poeple to save for the ones worht saving are gone, two brothers that have shuffled of their mortal coil and have ascended to the throne of Heaven despite regrets and the sins of the past so long gone and forgiven. That’s when Castiel will move on from the Man Who Fell From Heaven to the Man Who Swallowed a Star; and then, he will find them in heaven and rejoice, for the stories he has now of his own, and the brethren he may save once his time on earth is gone and done.
